MLA Workshop on Servant Leadership


Co-organised by Open Institute of City University of Macau (CityU-OI) and Peter Drucker Academy (PDA), the Management as a Liberal Art Workshop on Servant Leadership hosted by Professor Mike Cortrite, Professor for MBA Programme at California Institute of Advanced Management (CIAM), was held on 28 September 2017 at Ho Yin Convention Cetre at City University of Macau.

 

The MLA Workshop began with open remarks by Dr Julia Wang, President of PDA; and Professor Sean Li, Academic Registrar of CityU. Dr Eva Khong, Executive Associate Dean of Faculty of Business of CityU was invited to present a souvenir to Professor Cortrite. The workshop was followed by a closing speech by Ms Jennie Ta, President of CIAM.

 

Led by Dr Priscilla Roberts, Course Coordinator of International Business Cohort Programme at Faculty of Business (FOB), more than 50 postgraduate students from FOB attended the workshop. The workshop also attracted a number of academic and industrial participants.

 

In the workshop, Professor Cortrite introduced principles and practices of servant leadership, as well as used movie clips to demonstrate certain concepts of servant leadership. At the end of the workshop, the students asked thoughtful questions about the application of servant leadership.

 

Dr Cortrite has been studying leadership as a practitioner and as an academic for over 35 years.


As a practitioner he worked for over 30 years in a Los Angeles area police Department as a police officer, supervisor, and manager. In 1981 he was promoted to a supervisory position and this started his lifelong quest to understand leadership and human motivation.

As an academic he has been a professor for the last 17 years and earned his Doctor of Education in Leadership from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He currently teaches classes in leadership and management in Masters of Business Administration and Masters of Public Administration at California State University and the California Institute of Advanced Management.
